Congratulations! Great course(s)!

Question about "Thank you very much" in Vietnamese. Great Myan says something like "Cảm ơn [rach] nhiêu", which I cannot find in the accompanying .pdf. What is the word she says right between ơn and nhiêu?

Thank you and keep up with the good work!

Growing up in the USA, I can still hear that the speaker speaks Vietnamese with an english accent. There should be a Vietnamese person who speaks Vietnamese with a Vietnamese accent.

I could really use the phonetics on how to properly pronounce it. the podcast isn't all that clear, so a rough phonetic translation and hints on the pitch (rising/falling) would be very helpful! I agree that you could put more in a lesson.

Thanks for including Vietnamese!

This is so amazing! I wish I had this before my trip to Saigon last year. We did our best with the words from the Lonely Planet, but it's impossible to understand the pronunciation of anything without hearing it. We learned a lot by being corrected, but I'll definitely study these pronunciations before I return to Vietnam.

Lessons have really helped. I'm better at speaking with the kids. The talk back slower. One note.. It's really hard to understand with several people speaking at once. Still in Vietnam.. Now in Nha Trang.

Hi,

Great series. Very helpful. A couple of questions:

#1- how many lessons will there be in total? The website says 50-60. Could you give me a more precise number?

#2- In a couple of previous lessons there's 'coming soon'. Will these ever be updated to actually include the content? Just wondering.

Keep up the great work and happy holidays. Thanks.

I have manually downloaded, but would love to get it into the podcast section for my ipod. Btw, if I haven't said so before.... I'm loving this. My wife doesn't have to teach me.

Jhow ban -

I just found this website and from this basic lesson #4, it appears well done. Thank you. How do I find Lesson # 1?

My nail tech and seamstress is Vietnamese and to be able to greet them in their language is going to be a trip. Cannot wait to see the expressions on their faces! This is just the beginning to be able to understand what the nail techs are saying about us Americans! Gotta start with the basics!

When she says you will say "yi" more in the north, and "chi" more in the south, they are two different words. They both mean "what", or in this case "anything".

But the word "yi" will be pronounced "zi" in the north. It is the same word with a different pronounciation. So you will hear "yi", "zi", or "chi". "yi" and "zi" are pronounced with a tone going down, and "chi" has a flat tone.

Just a quick note - It seems like you have adjusted your lesson a bit, and I appreciate it!
1) There's more space after each repeat to make sure I have time to say it.
2) The review had all three phrases
3) The rising intonation at the end of some phrases was gone - it was more representative of the actual phrase.

Thank you so much! Cám ón.

Jim

Just a quick note - It seems like you have adjusted your lesson a bit, and I appreciate it!
1) There’s more space after each repeat to make sure I have time to say it.
2) The review had all three phrases
3) The rising intonation at the end of some phrases was gone - it was more representative of the actual phrase.

Thank you so much! Cám ón.

Love the lessons... But I'd like to make a few comments:
1) I think there needs to be a LITTLE more time during the main lessons for repeating the words.

2) In the final review, it would be nice to have ALL of the constructions discussed reviewed: On a few of them, only the primary grammar point was reviewed.

3) Sometimes you say "Falling Tone", but it SOUNDS falling-rising: Is that more because you're rising intonation a little to imply "See? Like this?"

4) I do love your hosting, but it could help me out to hear the same words spoken by a second voice... perhaps a male voice? It doesn't need to be a "teamwork podcast" like JPod or anything, but having a second set of vocal cords doing the same words will help really establish the sound...

5) Perhaps every 5-10 lessons, you could release a "summary podcast" with all of the learning to date in it for review? That way I can review 10 lessons in 5 minutes rather than the 40 it takes to go through 10 podcasts.

Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Hey! I'm starting up, and want to concur with Will above - I'd like to see more put into the lessons... and what's more the PDF guide has a LOT more stuff in it, but no guide on how to read Vietnamese! I'm not sure if Xin is pronounced "Sheen" or "Hin", if there's rising, high, falling intonation... an overview on how to read Vietnamese script would make these supplementary materials a lot more useful.

It would also help me when ordering from menu - if I can get the basic reading principles down, I can order Phô.

Thanks!

Cool find! Six months ago, I married a wonderful lady from Vietnam, and we are going to Nha Trang over Christmastime to visit her family. It's my first time to Vietnam, so I'm excited about learning some phrases.

A polite suggestion: you could probably pack a little more in with a five-minute lesson. For example, using the new phrase in context my be fun.

Good luck!

thanks really nice to find on itunes - just about to go to vietnam.

if i could make a sauggestion though, id really appreciate a course with optional extras. with a theme uch as thankyou, but also other phrases. you can pack a fair bit into 5 minutes. as i can rewind and fast forward mi ipod, you could learn more if you were comfortable, but still making sure, as you did, through reptition, that you learnt the essential central phgrase.

anyway, just an idea
gam an - thankyou - is that how you'd spell it?
