Jag gillar din podsändningar! i really would like to learn Svensk because i love Swedish culture and the country. (and i havent been there even). and most of all i love the music, i’ve been listening to swedish music since… i dont know anymore,and that was one of the reasons why i fell inlove with sweden. i dream of speaking with jens lekman in swedish one day. haha. you have really nice accent joakim, what kinds of swedish music do you listen to, just curious.

About my accent: I would like to say that my accent really differs from the ones’ speaking a really aweful scandinavian accent. It does though sound a little British and sometimes a little American. In Sweden we officially learn british English, because it’s the “original” English, but since most movies come to us from the U.S. only with subtitles we get more influenced of that kind of vocabulary.

Your suggestion is really great and I hope that my boss really conciders it

I’m visiting Stockholm for the first time in July and having lived in other European countries I always like to be able to use simple phrases when visiting.

BTW - your accent is definitely Scandinavian - which makes it sound a little British however you use an American vocabulary - regardless, it is excellent.

One suggestion I’d make would be an audible glossary so that all the vocab is collected in like a reference audio file or a lesson on the basics of pronunciation to assist us in picking up new words from written materials or when we are travelling in Sweden.

It is hard for me to figure out which parts are pronounced, so… if you could let me know that would be great, if not thank you for your time anyways.

But I really do want to stress that I enjoy these particular podcasts and do, in fact, plan on subscribing when I have the financial means.

Regarding if I’m Swedish I am from Stockholm and my family (both sides) is Swedish since at least the 17th century. I don’t have records of earlier reletives or reletives not being born in Sweden with Swedish parents. So, yepp I’m Swedish I don’t have a clue how my accent sounds like. Sometimes I think it sounds British, sometimes American but mostly it has a hint of genuine Swedish accent.

I love how you break a part each word so we know the correct way to pronounce these words. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find your Swedish pod casts really useful and thanks to them am learning Swedish at a really impressive rate:). You’re pod cast’s are informative and very clear and concise therefore making it easier to pronounce words the proper way. I love this language but lucky for me i have many friends in Sweden so i can practice with them.

The Problem is ALL Swedish people CAN speak English. I noticed that many strangers have trouble to learn Swedish because of it. Anyhow. I will continue learning.

The melody of Norwegian is not very similar to Swedish, just so you know

I hope you all learning Swedish thinks the same. You should get your hands on some music in Swedish, since it’s really nice when someone sings. Ok, I must say that norwegian has a similar sound when it’s sung

At the same time I will try and get all of your lessons down to a tee, and then try and work the two together somehow and try and attempt a basic conversation in Swedish! Here’s hoping!

I must say that I’ve laughed at all Swedish text books that I have come across. They are really terrible but I guess it’s not their fault, it’s the language. Swedish is not very consequent, many old expressions and text book swedish is a little different from “real” swedish unfortunately. The best thing to do is to get into the spoken swedish as quick as possible. I can now only recommend my lessons, since I am trying to make them so authentic as possible. You should also try to squeeze as much spoken swedish from your friend as possible and let him decide what’s weird and not.

As for the R, I’ve noticed that we have several different Rs so if you roll too much it will sound as weird as your american. The good news: it’s almost like the american one but lighter and a little closer to the teeth. However, when we want to be extra clear and emphasize something by exaggerating we will roll it extremely. So my tip is to learn the rolling part and then listen alot to swedish material to hear how it really sounds and to make the rs light. In southern Sweden the R is totally different. It’s in the throat.

I really hope you are going to become fluent enough to have a conversation with your friend! That’s what it’s all about.

I am now working with different materials to gain a decent amount of spoken and written skills. I have read some bad things about the Swedish books (and there aren’t many) but it’s just something to have to give examples of full conversations. I use this with a verb reference, and the SP phrases for spoken things.

At the moment I am up to about lesson 20 so far, and picking up how to say things reasonably well. The rolled “r” is always fun for English speakers Difficult but fun to try! I’m reading up on the difference in word orders/tenses to learn how to make my own sentences.

My initial goal is to speak Swedish pretty well, enough to have a conversation in Swedish with my friend, and then if I can become fluent then that would be amazing! I’m just searching for the correct method to move my Swedish forward………

To clarify “roligt” means “funny/fun” and “trevligt” means “nice”

I have a feeling that certain phrases in my book may be a little outdated. In this lesson you say “Trevligt att träffas” whereas my book says Roligt att träffas.” Is trevligt more modern, or does it really matter which you say? They both seem to mean pleasent/great to meet you.

I’m from Stockholm myself but there are a slight difference in the pronunciation almost everywhere in Sweden. Although the different dialects in Swedish are practically dead there are still different accents. Due to television, radio and our writing language all swedes can understand eachother without any complications. Some dialects remains though, as those in the region of Dalarna where you still have words that can’t be understood everywhere.
