As for the pronunciation, i start with my lips in front, and move my lips back so my mouth is half open. And the tip of my tongue is starts at the roof of my mouth behind my front teeth and gradually comes down to the bottom of my mouth when I move my lips back.

I think a good way to explain the pronunication may be to romanize the syllable as:

jooweh - this is actually a double vowel in Korean, which means it has two vowels squished into one syllable. So try to pronounce “joo” as the first syllable and “weh” as the second. And then gradually try to speak faster and squish em in together to get one syllable.

Just one question: I’m confused about why “g” and “d” are used when they sound more like “k” and “t” respectively. For example, “GamsahamniDa” sounds like “KamsahamniTa.” Can you explain why that is?

One question I had about this lesson is: what does ‘hamnida’ mean? I noticed it’s used when saying ‘thank you’ as well as ’sorry’.

Hey Keith, you are awesome in these lessons! Great job! i actually got to apply it at work, and my boss was so impressed that one customer was really happy when i said thank you in korean. Keep it up!

By the way, how do you say the ‘fighting’? is it the same as it is pronounced in english?
and what about ‘aja’? isn’t it also a form of encouragement? what does it mean?

Back in high school, i’ve always wanted to learn Korean but just can’t find the right resources for me to learn. And having recently noticed that a lot of Koreans are coming in the Starbucks store where i work, i’ve decided to start learning, to help our customers feel appreciated in our store by hearing the barista greet them in Korean. Man, my boss would love me for this.
i know 2 other languages already, and i know that adding another one is good for my brain. Thanks for all the lessons, my friend. i like listening to all of it, i listen to it everytime i have breaks.

I had an overnight stay at Incheon so decided to at least learn how to say “thank you”. I think people appreciated it, they spoke Korean back to me, yay! I put a couple of different Korean “thank you” lessons on my iPod for the plane journey over but yours was by far the best as it was short and easy to follow. Thanks! If I ever go back there for a longer trip, I’ll be sure to take your podcasts with me.

You’re correct! mianhamnida/mianhae are both “I’m sorry” as well, but I was going for the most polite version because typically, you try to be as polite as possible. But mianhamnida/mianhae are both used as well. Especially the latter

Just one thing on this lesson - I thought “mi-an-ham-ni-da” / “mi-an-hae” was the usual way of saying “I’m sorry” but you made no mention of it.

ijjok means this side, or this way, but you can translate it as “this person is (name)”

Guys…using “anyong ha sei yo” at Korean restaurants is freaking crazy, man!!! For whatever reason, they think it’s really funny when white people use any Korean phrases… Makes interacting with the waiters/waitresses a lot of fun.

Yes I am Japanese. I noticed a similarity in the grammar structure between Korean and Japanese in “How much is this” I like that phrase most!

In addition to what Vicky said, a lot of the spelling “exceptions” make sense linguistically. Try to say “입니다” (ib ni da) really fast.

Well, did you try it? When you do that the sound naturally changes from a “ㅂ” (b) to a “ㅁ” (m). Or should have at least

Another example is “괜찮다” (gwenchanta). The last part is usually pronounced as “다” (da) when left alone. But because of the last “ㅎ” in the syllable right before, the next syllable “다” (da) becomes aspirated. And an aspirated “다” (da) is “타” (ta).

This might be a little confusing, but it all makes sense with time. Some of the phonetic changes may even come naturally as your studies progress. Just hang in their Maxie.

And, how can I help you???
입니다…ㅂ you have to type Q letter to have that ㅂ- sound. either sound of P/F
있습니다…meaning of have it. ㅆ you have to type shift + T since you have ㅅ ㅅ sound touching next word, so u r adding extra ㅅ so it goes to ㅆ, ㅅ. and sound shorter, also touching your teeth with your tongue when you say ㅆ but tongue goes inside when u say ㅅ.

이것, 저것…것 is thing….normally when you use, 이거 itself we don’t say ㅅ but when 이것 + 은, 저것 + 은 we do use ㅅ sound. Because when you say, 이거…you might pointing out THE THING so that person already looking at thing when you are asking. this thing, that thing….

And, lot of English sounds different from writing so we do have spelling test from school.

Korean is same, so we do say 임니다….but writing is 입니다. So when I was a kid in school from Korea, teacher gave us a test about how to write when teacher said the sentences.
