Gamsahamnida! My wife and I will be in Seoul soon to adopt a little girl. I will be saying “thank you” quite often during the trip. I’m glad that I can say “great thanks” to her foster parents. I can’t wait to do the whole unit!

Thank you!! So much for this podcast. My wife was adopted from Korea and we are visiting her Korean family in October. The podcast has been a blessing. I know that I can go and say a few words and phrases that I hope will impress them.

I like how you say the words. It’s really easy to follow and make’s the person listening want to hurry up and learn more.
I acutally told and couple of my friends about this website they seem to love it more than me. I thought that wasn’t possible so keep it up and thanks it really helps! U can’t wait to visit Korea!

As for the pronunciation, i start with my lips in front, and move my lips back so my mouth is half open. And the tip of my tongue is starts at the roof of my mouth behind my front teeth and gradually comes down to the bottom of my mouth when I move my lips back.

I think a good way to explain the pronunication may be to romanize the syllable as:

jooweh - this is actually a double vowel in Korean, which means it has two vowels squished into one syllable. So try to pronounce “joo” as the first syllable and “weh” as the second. And then gradually try to speak faster and squish em in together to get one syllable.

Question on pronunciation of the word for sorry. The pdf spells it “joesonghamnida” but it sounds like you are making a “tray” sound instead of a “jway” sound. Can you be specific about that, like what the tongue position is. Are the lips slightly pursed?

Just one question: I’m confused about why “g” and “d” are used when they sound more like “k” and “t” respectively. For example, “GamsahamniDa” sounds like “KamsahamniTa.” Can you explain why that is?

Nikki, “hamnida” is the polite form of the Korean verb “hada”, which basically means “to do”. If you look up “hamnida” in a dictionary you probably won’t find it, but look up “hada” and you will.

i am chinese but i’m really interested in japanese and korean culture. i was very happy when i found out that iTunes has language podcasts. There was a time when i had to try my little korean, i went to this 24-hour shop in SF and greeted the korean manager “Anyeong-Seo” and since asian people look the same she thought i was a korean and she bombarded me with words that i can’t decipher. She was puzzled when she heard me say ’sorry, i don’t speak korean’ in korean language and she was staring at me when i left the shop, :wink:, that was hell of an experience. Well, maybe i should also try a little japanese sometimes :grin:…

I agree that Keith has a somewhat American accent in his Korean(which is very fluent), and no offense but just in case anybody’s wondering whether they should take your comment seriously, as a native speaker of Korean, I don’t have any problem understanding what Keith says because his pronunciations are very clear Keep up your Korean studies 화이팅!!

Lessons are good Keith. But when these people, if they ever meet native Koreans will have no idea what they are saying. You have lost your Korean accent or never had it. Maybe getting a native to speak will help, but these are good refresher courses. Also Koreanclass101 podcast is awesome, thanks.

By the way, how do you say the ‘fighting’? is it the same as it is pronounced in english?

Back in high school, i’ve always wanted to learn Korean but just can’t find the right resources for me to learn. And having recently noticed that a lot of Koreans are coming in the Starbucks store where i work, i’ve decided to start learning, to help our customers feel appreciated in our store by hearing the barista greet them in Korean. Man, my boss would love me for this.
i know 2 other languages already, and i know that adding another one is good for my brain. Thanks for all the lessons, my friend. i like listening to all of it, i listen to it everytime i have breaks.

I had an overnight stay at Incheon so decided to at least learn how to say “thank you”. I think people appreciated it, they spoke Korean back to me, yay! I put a couple of different Korean “thank you” lessons on my iPod for the plane journey over but yours was by far the best as it was short and easy to follow. Thanks! If I ever go back there for a longer trip, I’ll be sure to take your podcasts with me.

You’re correct! mianhamnida/mianhae are both “I’m sorry” as well, but I was going for the most polite version because typically, you try to be as polite as possible. But mianhamnida/mianhae are both used as well. Especially the latter

Just one thing on this lesson - I thought “mi-an-ham-ni-da” / “mi-an-hae” was the usual way of saying “I’m sorry” but you made no mention of it.

If you’re introducing your friends you can say “이쪽은 _(name)__입니다.” [ijjok-eun (name)imnida.”

ijjok means this side, or this way, but you can translate it as “this person is (name)”

I’m really enjoying these lessons so far! I love the way you make the lessons personable by giving funny examples, telling little jokes and encouraging us by yelling “fighting!” It sounds like you’re having fun teaching us and that you really want us to learn. You may want to check the metadata associated with this and the previous podcast as downloaded through iTunes. Presently they are both named “Lesson #50 - Explaining Allergies”. I was able to change this in the “Get Info” panel to the correct information, but it’s probably something you want to take care of.
