Σύμφωνα με τη μυθολογία, απέκτησε το όνομα της από τη θεά Αθηνά ύστερα από συναγωνισμό με τον Ποσειδώνα για την ανάδειξη του προστάτη της πόλης. Η ιστορία της θεωρείται πως ξεκινά ήδη από την Νεολιθική εποχή, αναδεικνύεται όμως σε κέντρο πολιτισμού και διανόησης κατά την αρχαιότητα και ειδικότερα στην Χρυσή εποχή (500-300 πΧ), οπότε και μπήκαν τα θεμέλια της δημοκρατίας και αναπτύχθηκαν οι τέχνες και τα γράμματα. Χαρακτηριστικό επίτευγμα εκείνης της εποχής ήταν η κατασκευή του Παρθενώνα. Από το 146 πΧ, με την υπαγωγή της στην Ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία και την εξάπλωση του χριστιανισμού, άρχισε να ξεθωριάζει η λάμψη και η δόξα της. 1310 χρόνια αργότερα, περνά στην κατοχή των Οθωμανών για 400 χρόνια, ως το 1821 που ξεκινά ο αγώνας ανεξαρτησίας. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου η Αθήνα υπέστη πολλές καταστροφές και σε μνημεία μεγάλης αρχαιολογικής σημασίας. On the west, it is washed by the Siggitikos Gulf and on the east by the Toronaios Gulf, whereas in the center of this oblong strip of land there exists the Itamos Mountain, or else Dragoynteli, a popular winter destination. There are many places for one to visit, such as the ancient town, the castle, and the temple of Saint Athanasios in Toroni, the sixteenth century temple in Nikiti, as well as the windmills in Sykia. The list of places is completed with the various traditional fish villages, such as Porto Koufo, which is the biggest and safest natural port in the whole country.
