----Formal English----

Sofia

Sofia is Bulgaria's capital and largest city, with a population of 1.27 million. It sits in a valley at the base of Mount Vitosha in western Bulgaria, surrounded by mountains on every side. There is also an important mineral spring nearby.

Sofia is an extremely old city. Prehistoric settlements have been found both in the center and on the outskirts. The town walls are remarkably well preserved and date back to before the seventh century B.C.

Sofia has a humid continental climate, meaning that the temperatures change significantly with the seasons. Summers are very warm, and winters are quite cold. Sofia does tend to be a little cooler than the rest of Bulgaria, thanks to its position in a valley.

Sofia is considered a beta- world city, meaning that it plays an important role in the global economy. It is the economic and financial center of Bulgaria, hosting most of the country's international businesses. Sofia has also become a major destination for computing firms such as IBM and HP to outsource their work.

In addition, Sofia is a center of Bulgarian education and culture. It houses sixteen universities, with Saint Clement of Ohrid University of Sofia being the most prestigious. It is home to archaeological sites and medieval churches, like the Alexander Nevsky cathedral, which can hold 10,000 people. There are many museums in Sofia, like the National Historical Museum and the Sofia City Art Gallery. It is the major hub of Bulgarian media outlets as well.

Alepu Swamp

Alepu Swamp goes by many names, being referred to not only as a swamp, but also a marsh, lagoon, and even a beach. What all of these names show us is just why this area is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination in Bulgaria.
Alepu is actually part of a nature preserve that consists of a swampy area with two lakes. It's located about a half mile south of the famous Duni resort and just three miles south of the town of Sozopol. The region belongs to the larger Ropotamo Important Bird Area.
Tourists who are interested in rare birds will relish visiting this area because many protected and rare water birds make their homes there. Both foreign and local ornithologists often spend time there photographing and studying these birds. Many developers are also building resorts in the area, much to the dismay of local ecology experts, who are concerned about the rare wildlife there.
On the edge of the lagoon lies a string of sand dunes that separates it from the Black Sea on the east side. The dunes and lagoon are currently protected as a national nature preserve. In keeping with the "natural" theme of Alepu, the beach that's right next to the area is very popular with nudists. This beach is also one of the few truly wild beaches left in Bulgaria. The entire region is a nature lover's dream vacation.
